State Reps. Ron Kind (D-WI) and Mike Gallagher (R-WI) have co-introduced a bipartisan bill designed to protect the Wisconsin dairy industry.
The bill would establish the Dairy Pricing and Policy Commission to help provide solutions to the issues that Wisconsin dairy farmers face, according to a release from Rep. Kind's office.
"Our dairy farms are the backbone of Wisconsin's economy," Kind wrote in a June 30 Twitter post. "As June Dairy Month draws to a close, I'm proud to introduce a bipartisan bill with @RepGallagher to bring everyone to the table to address the challenges facing our family farmers and ensure the future of Wisconsin dairy remains bright."
The committee would consist of a coalition of dairy farmers, processors and other industry experts to address issues and new reforms and regulations, according Dairy Reporter.
For the past several years, Wisconsin dairy farmers have faced numerous challenges and the committee will help them take action to implement the policies they need to succeed.
“Dairy farms are central to Wisconsin’s identity. But for more than five years, a historically challenging environment has devastated the dairy economy across our state,” Gallagher said in a statement. “We need to help these farmers get back on their feet, and that starts with bringing together experts across the agricultural, academic and dairy industries to better inform Congress on policies that will change the status quo.”
