Wisconsin State Rep. Ron Kind has announced he will not be running for reelection and is retiring from office.
WXOW News reported that Kind made his announcement in front of Roosevelt Elementary School, where he went to school and where he announced his first campaign for office over two decades ago.
"I want to thank the people of this Congressional District for putting their faith, trust and confidence in me throughout these 26 years," Kind wrote in an Aug. 10 Twitter post. "I hope I represented you with the dignity and decency this office deserves."
The Wisconsin state representative was first elected to Congress in 1996 and became the longest serving Democrat in the state’s delegation.
"Thank you for your dedicated service," fellow Wisconsin State Rep. Katrina Shankland (D-Stevens Point) tweeted in response to Kind's announcement. "It’s truly been a pleasure to work with and learn from you. We will miss you a lot in the third and appreciate your leadership."
Kind is a La Crosse native and whenever he wasn't in D.C. he was usually found with his wife in their La Crosse home, where they will retire in 2022.
"My wife, Tawni, and I are looking forward to entering the next chapter of our lives," Kind wrote in a separate Aug. 10 Twitter post.
