U.S. Rep. Ron Kind (D-WI) is praising the recently enacted infrastructure bill, saying it will help Wisconsin close the "digital divide" between those who have fast Internet service and those who don't.
“Access to high-speed internet is a necessity in today’s world," the congressman tweeted. "The Bipartisan Infrastructure Deal will take critical steps to expand broadband access for students, farmers and families across Wisconsin and close the digital divide once and for all.”
Nationally, the infrastructure bill will provide $65 billion for improving broadband access, National Public Radio reported. According to a Temple University survey, around 40% of college students had difficulty accessing the internet or a computer during the pandemic, the news agency reported.
In Wisconsin, a quarter of Wisconsin’s rural population does not have reliable access to high-speed internet, Wisconsin Public Radio reported. That number drops to less than half in Clark County, the story said.
The infrastructure bill will provide $100 million to expand broadband in Wisconsin.
