University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's hockey win against UW-Superior came only days before the announcement that the Blugolds will have an added exhibition contest against UW-Madison in January.
The Bluegolds' 3-1 victory over the UW-Superior Yellowjackets on Saturday, Nov. 13 followed an even wilder 10-0 win over the Northland College Lumberjills the previous Thursday.
In Saturday's game, Blugolds' forward Hanna Zavoral got assists from defense Bree Osborne and forward Emma Peterson to put Eau Claire on the board about halfway through the first period, according to a Blugold's news release.
Zavoral scored again almost five minutes into the second period with assist from defense Danielle Slominski, and then again only minutes later with an assist from defense Emily Hart.
Superior did manage to get on the board in the second period with one puck into the net but Eau Claire out-shot the Yellowjackets 31-14 to remain undefeated so far this season.
Three days after their win against Superior, the Associated Press reported that the currently third-ranked Blugolds will face off in exhibition play against the Badgers in what is expected to be a matchup between the top two NCAA Division III and Division I teams.
"We're very excited for this opportunity," Blugolds Head Coach Erik Strand said in the AP news story. "The Badgers are arguably one of the best programs in the history of NCAA Women’s Hockey. To have the chance to line up across from them and compete against the best players and best coaching staffs in the country for 60 minutes is a valuable opportunity to learn more about our program, who we are and what we will need to work on to have success in achieving our goals this season."
Tickets will not be sold for the game. Instead, the first 2,273 fans will get in with a donation of any new or gently used book appropriate for kindergarten through eighth grade. No monetary donations will be accepted.
Eau Claire's next scheduled game is expected to be at home against UW-River Falls on Saturday, Nov. 20.
