State Rep. Ron Kind (D-La Crosse) recently expressed his condolences for the Waukesha Christmas parade tragedy, which resulted in numerous fatalities and even more injuries when an SUV drove into the 58th annual Christmas parade in Waukesha.
According to The New York Times, at least five people were killed and 40 wounded during this year's parade, which was themed "Comfort and Joy," after a red SUV collided with the procession at about 4:30 p.m., seriously injuring dozens of people, including children.
“Tawni and I are praying for Waukesha in the wake of this terrible tragedy," Kind tweeted. "Please keep the victims, their loved ones and all members of the community affected in your thoughts tonight.”
The Waukesha Police Department's Chief Daniel Thompson stated that officers are now questioning a person of interest and confirmed that officers at the parade fired rounds at the SUV driver during the incident in an effort to stop him.
According to an article on news.com.au, Darrell Brooks Jr., an amateur rapper from the Milwaukee area who was released from prison only days before the parade, has been brought in for questioning but has not been listed as a suspect or charged.
Brooks, who has an extensive criminal history stretching all the way back to 1999, according to Fox News, had recently been released on $1,000 bond on charges of reckless endangerment, violence, domestic abuse, resisting arrest and bail skipping at the time of the incident.
Brooks' attorney did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Additionally, CNN and NBC reported that law enforcement sources have stated that there appears to be no link between the incident with terrorism or the recent Kyle Rittenhouse verdict at this time.
Local officials have established a temporary monument for the victims in Veterans Park, just west of the crime scene.
