A change to the 2021-2022 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference basketball schedule that has programs playing two conference games a month ahead than usual doesn’t present a problem for the UW-Eau Claire Blugolds women’s basketball team.
Heading into their Dec. 8 home matchup against Bethany Lutheran, the Blugolds seek to extend their eight-game winning streak, which includes two conference wins over UW-Oshkosh and UW-Stevens Point.
UW-Eau Claire play-by-play man Scott Montesano stresses to others that the Blugolds’ success is nothing accidental.
“Saying this Blugolds WBB team is on a 'magical' run is borderline a disservice to say,” Montesano tweeted on Dec. 2. “They are flat out playing VERY GOOD basketball through their first seven games.”
The Blugolds on Dec. 4 defeated UW-Stevens Point 64-38 to improve to 8-0 overall, 2-0 conference.
Jade Ganski and Jessie Ruden combined for 30 points in the victory, the Leader-Telegram reported.
UW-Eau Claire’s defense had an adverse effect on the Pointers, who shot a miserable 22% from the field.
“Defense is a huge deal for us and we locked on the players we needed to,” Ruden said, the Leader-Telegram reported. “I thought we played good team defense overall.”
Conference play for the Blugolds began on Dec. 1 with UW-Eau Claire triumphing over UW-Oshkosh 70-53.
