It has been quite the season for the La Crosse Central boys basketball team who improved to 21-1 with its 17th straight win, with the most recent victory coming in blowout fashion in a 78-38 win over La Crosse Logan on Feb. 10.

The Riverhawks are running away with the conference with a perfect 9-0 record. This season the team has outscored its opponents 1,381 to 965, according to Max Preps. Coach Toff Fergot said that the team’s chemistry is something that points them ahead in the game, as they played together throughout their youth program.

“Even though they were different grades oftentimes when we get together if we’re playing tournaments – in the summer, we’re mixing and matching kids from all different levels – and so they've known each other for a long time, played together a long time, so they just have great chemistry between them,” Fergot said.

Fergot said this year the team has made strides defensively, which he said has been a big part of the team’s success so far. In some games when the team wasn’t shooting as well, they were able to stay in the game because of their work on defense.

Another major factor in the winning streak is its senior leadership.

“We kind of have leadership by committee, but certainly I think our seniors overall have done a really good job,” Fergot said. “I think Devon Fielding is one. I think Colin Adams has done a really good job for us also as a senior leader.”

Fielding and Adams were recently excellent for the Riverhawks in a win against Tomah where they each hit a pair of threes in a 67-55 win.

But it isn’t just the seniors who have shined, Fergot said.

“And then even some of our underclassmen have done a nice job,” Fergot said. “Nick Williams has done a really nice job for us too. We’re just trying to get better each day and kind of see where it takes us in the end.”
