Chippewa Valley resident Gregg Jochimsen has put the area on the map as the first American to ever win the Kubb World Championship, claiming both the teams and individual titles at this year’s event near the coast of Sweden.
Following his history-making run, Jochimsen wasn’t shy about basking in all his newfound attention.
“I've had the experience here playing the Nationals and being in that center stage here a few times, so I really welcomed it, I enjoyed it,” he told WQOW recently.
A seventh-grade social studies teacher by trade, Jochimsen noted that he has been playing kubb for approximately ten years and is now a five-time U.S. National Championship winner. The U.S. tournament, coincidentally, is held in Eau Claire.
Kubb is a Swedish lawn game that involves knocking down wooden blocks by throwing wooden batons. It has similarities to bowling, and the objective is to knock down all the wooden blocks and then the king before the other team does. The sport gained considerable popularity beginning in the 1980s with the introduction of commercial kubb sets.
