News 18 WQOW anchor Keith Edwards is doing all he can to prepare his audience for what may be yet to come.
"On a personal note, you have probably noticed a pretty significant change in my hairstyle,” Edwards said on the Nov. 3 news broadcast, which is posted on News 18 WQOW. “That is because I am preparing for the possibility of losing all of my hair.”
Edwards went on to share with viewers that he has been diagnosed with lymphoma, which was found in his thyroid, and is now preparing for chemotherapy treatments. Edwards explained he has already undergone recent surgery for his condition.
“Lymphoma, a type of cancer, was recently found in my thyroid gland,” he said on the news broadcast. “I underwent surgery. The next step is chemotherapy, which will start in early November. One of the many side effects of chemo is, of course, going bald — so I just wanted to give you advance notice of an upcoming big change in my appearance.”
In making his announcement, Edwards also made it a point of thanking his team of doctors, adding that his prognosis is good. He also praised his friends, family and coworkers for their ongoing support. His coanchors were visibly moved during his speech.
A native of Wisconsin who grew up in the Village of Lake Hallie, Edwards began his career in radio broadcasting as a DJ back in the 1980s, according to his bio at News 18 WQOW. At News 18, he anchors the 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. broadcasts. Over his more than four decades in the business, he has held many positions and won multiple awards, along with serving as a mentor to many other local broadcasters launching their careers.
