Congressman Derrick Van Orden of Wisconsin's 3rd District has introduced his first bill in the 119th Congress. The legislation, known as the Strengthening Servicemembers with Milk Act, was presented alongside Chief Deputy Whip Guy Reschenthaler from Pennsylvania's 14th District. The bill aims to ensure that members of the Armed Forces have access to fluid or powdered milk at dining facilities on military installations by directing the U.S. Secretary of Defense to provide it.
The Strengthening Servicemembers with Milk Act was initially introduced during the 118th Congress by Van Orden and Reschenthaler. Congressman Van Orden stated, "This legislation supports two of the greatest cornerstones of our nation – our farmers and servicemembers." He emphasized that milk is a crucial nutrient source for maintaining health and readiness among servicemembers. He expressed pride in reintroducing this bill with Rep. Reschenthaler to benefit both troops and dairy farmers nationwide.
Rep. Reschenthaler highlighted Pennsylvania's contribution to dairy production, noting, "Over 6,000 dairy farms in the commonwealth of Pennsylvania produce 10 billion pounds of milk each year — playing a vital role in powering our nation and its citizens." He expressed pride in reintroducing the legislation alongside his fellow Navy veteran to support farmers and increase milk access for servicemembers.
The original cosponsors of this bill include Representatives Glenn Thompson (PA-15), Trent Kelly (MS-01), Don Bacon (NE-02), Doug LaMalfa (CA-01), and Mark Messmer (IN-08).
