Today, Congressman Derrick Van Orden and Congressman Don Davis introduced the Ag Vets Act. This legislation aims to permanently establish the Ag Vets program by directing the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture to award competitive grants to prepare veterans for agricultural employment.

The Ag Vets Act was initially introduced in the 118th Congress and included in the House Agriculture Committee’s 2024 Farm Bill. "Our veterans have the discipline and work ethic needed to succeed in America’s agriculture industry," stated Rep. Van Orden. He emphasized that expanding opportunities for veterans not only supports their transition to civilian life but also aids farmers and ranchers.

Congressman Don Davis highlighted the importance of providing necessary training as veterans transition from military service to civilian life. "The shortage of workforce in agriculture presents an opportunity to leverage the valuable skills that veterans possess," he said, noting that training veterans can help ensure a steady supply of food and clothing for Americans.

The Ag Vets Act will require grant recipients to offer training and education focused on farm and ranch business operations, curriculum adoption for enterprise management, workshops, tours, field experiences, or other activities identified by the Secretary to enhance veterans' knowledge and skills in agriculture.
