Welcome to Wisconsin’s “All American Great River Road National Scenic Byway”. The All American Road (AAR) designation was announced in February, 2021 after the WI Mississippi River Parkway Commission submitted the application to be elevated to this status. It was one of 15 new AAR designations in the country with 8 of those 15 being States on the National Great River Road chain of 10 States from Lake Itasca, MN to the Gulf of Mexico.
An All American Road must have unique, one of a kind characteristics that make the road a destination unto itself. Why is this so important to the 8 Wisconsin Counties and 33 communities of our “String of Pearls”? The assets are here and our tourism economy is getting back on its feet after a 2020 Covid-19 year of struggle.
People need to know about La Crosse County, Grand Dad’s Bluff, the festivals, the historic sites, the hiking and biking trails and certainly the water recreation as well. We cannot assume visitors will “just know” what we have to offer. We constantly need to tell our story in ways that reach travelers – local and those from a distance. This designation puts the WI Great River Road on the national and international stage is a stronger way to continue strengthening our local economy and supports our local businesses. We are so proud to be Wisconsin’s ONLY All American Road National Scenic Byway.
Major League Fishing Takes on La Crosse
Pro Jimmy Washam of Covington, Tennessee brought a five-bass limit weighing 17 pounds, 15 ounces to the stage on Sunday to win $200,000 and the TITLE belt at the second annual Major League Fishing (MLF) Tackle Warehouse TITLE Presented by Mercury – the Pro Circuit Championship, Presented by Bad Boy Mowers – on the Mississippi River in La Crosse, Wisconsin. Washam won by a 1-pound, 3-ounce margin over Berkley pro Bobby Lane of Lakeland, Florida who weighed a limit of 17-15, good for second place and $50,000. Favorite Fishing pro Zack Birge of Blanchard, Oklahoma rounded out the top three, weighing a five-bass limit of 15-6 and taking home $30,000.
Events like these are what really put La Crosse on the map at the national level! We plan to continue our support of events like Major League Fishing Tournaments in the future.
