Tomah Health will host its annual Healthy Aging Expo on September 16 at the Cranberry Country Lodge in Tomah. The event, which runs from 9 a.m. to noon, is organized by Tomah Health Community Outreach and focuses on promoting health among older adults.
“Every age group has different health issues in it. We talk about things like osteoporosis as you age, especially in women, and I think that events like this that focus on age-specifics can really help target those important health areas and risks that can occur as we age,” said Whitney Sanjari, community educator for Tomah Health Community Outreach.
The expo is free to attend and will feature health screenings such as blood pressure checks and balance assessments. There will also be booths with information on senior health topics. Sanjari noted the importance of these screenings: “A lot of times you cannot realize you have some of these issues going on or you may not realize the extent of them, especially when it comes to things like blood pressure or even depression. So, I think it’s important to understand and look at patterns in our lives and screenings help kind of bring attention.”
A special presentation titled “Everyday Cooking for One or Two” is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., followed by a cooking demonstration from 11 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. “We really wanted to focus on meeting that need to help people learn instead of cooking for eight or more, how do you cook for one or two,” Sanjari explained. “The lecture is really going to kind of dive into that and give some suggestions and ideas of how you can make cooking more enjoyable and how can you make cooking more affordable and how can you scale back recipes, especially if you’re used to cooking for a large family.” Recipes will be demonstrated during the session.
Attendees will receive complimentary food and refreshments, and door prizes will be available.
