The Jackson Correction Institution recently celebrated the first group of inmates to complete its new computer numerical control educational program with a certificate ceremony that left many feeling a grander sense of hope.
“I think it opened a lot of doors and gave me a lot of opportunities for when I get out,” program graduate Kenneth Groholski told News8000.com.
Department of Workforce Development Secretary-designee Amy Pechacek, Wisconsin Department of Financial Institutions Secretary Kathy Blumenfeld and Department of Corrections Secretary Kevin Carr were all on hand for the ceremony after all the courses took place in a mobile lab with Western Technical College partnering in the effort.
A medium security prison located in Black River Falls, Jackson Correctional Institution first opened in 1996 and now houses in the neighborhood of 1,000 inmates with the population being divided into small groups called housing units that are managed by staff members.
All inmates at the facility that do not have a diploma are encouraged to participate in adult basic education courses, including working toward a GED while incarcerated at the facility.
Other classes offered at Jackson include parenting, financial literacy, food preparation, computer literacy, math, business, small engine repair and welding.
