Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers proudly points to President Joe Biden’s signing of the Respect for Marriage Act as a bold step for humanity.
“Our kids deserve to grow up in a world where they're free to be who they are and marry who they love,” Evers posted on Twitter not long after the President signed into law the legislation that federally stamps unions between same-sex and mixed-race couples as the law of the land.
Biden’s signing effectively renders the more than two-decade-old Defense of Marriage Act, which wholly defined marriage as a union between a man and a woman and allowed states to refuse to recognize same-sex marriages performed in other states, obsolete.
While still a senator, CNN reports Biden voted in favor of the legislation before announcing his support for same-sex unions more than ten years ago.
With the Respect for Marriage Act now a federal law, unions between same-sex and mixed-race couples are legalized across the country. And though states are still not required to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, they will be required to recognize such couplings performed in other states.
With the bill officially becoming law this week, the president hosted a celebration that was attended by Vice President Kamala Harris, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer; FOX News said. The White House was lit up in the colors of the rainbow, the symbol that members of the LGBTQA+ community use to represent equality.
