The La Crosse Police Department has issued a reminder to the public about driving safely in snowy conditions after a car crashed with a semi-truck, killing a man.
A 41-year-old La Crosse man was killed on Dec. 28 when he couldn’t stop his car in the snow and slammed into the trailer of the semi-truck. The crash occurred on I-90 Westbound in La Crosse County near West Salem at 1:55 p.m.
The driver of the truck was not injured. According to a report, the semi-truck was slowing down because of other crashes and the car was unable to stop and became trapped underneath the truck.
“Keep these in mind while driving! Remember to clean off your car, leave the house early, maintain a reactionary gap and slow down. Drive safe out there,” the La Crosse police posted on its Twitter account.
According to the Zebra citing statistics from the Federal Highway Administration, more than 1,800 people are killed in car accidents related to snow or icy conditions each year. Those numbers make winter driving almost as dangerous as texting while driving.
Other notable facts compiled by the Zebra indicate driving on snowy roads can take a car 10 times longer to completely stop, and about 17% of vehicle crashes occur in snowy conditions.
