First responders were praised by Rep. Ron Kind after they responded to a shooting threat at La Crosse Central High School.

After a threat was reported on the morning of Jan. 3, students and staff of La Crosse Central High School were evacuated from the school. Students and staff will remain at Longfellow Middle School for the “immediate future.” Kind took to Twitter to thank the first responders.

“Thank you to the emergency personnel and first responders on the scene," Kind said in a post to his Twitter account on Jan. 3. "I’m keeping the Central High School community in my thoughts as we wait to learn more.”

The Wisconsin State Patrol and La Crosse Police Department continue to investigate the incident. The high school was also shut down for a day last November following a threat sent to a teacher from a student that said, “I’m going to shoot up the school tomorrow.” The 17-year-old student was arrested by police the following day, and charges of terrorist threats and disorderly conduct are pending against him.

The threat made against La Crosse Central in this instance was a bomb threat, according to a report from the Lacrosse Tribune. School activities were cancelled that day, although classes continued as scheduled the very next day. Bomb sniffing dogs did not find any explosives in a search after the school was evacuated.

Traffic was restricted in front of the school as the evacuation and search took place, according to a report from the Lacrosse Tribune. The incident was not discussed by the La Crosse Board of Education when they met on the Monday night after the threat. In 2021, shootings at schools created 32 deaths and 94 injuries in the United States.
