With the official esports season set to kick-in later this month, the La Crosse YMCA has launched a new nine-week esports program.

“Level up your game,” YMCA officials posted on Facebook. “Register today for our new nine-week esports program. Develop the social, strategic and problem-solving skills necessary to grow into thriving adults all in a safe, moderated and inclusive environment.”

The program is slated to run from March 21 through May 26, with registration now being open. Esports, otherwise known as electronic sports, is organized competitive video gaming, offering children who take part in part in the competition a chance to participate in a non-traditional sports league. The games take the form of organized, multiplayer online video game competitions, standing out as one of the fastest growing trends for youth engagement.

On its website, YMCA officials highlight the esports program pushes teamwork, leadership, individual growth and equity focus, encouraging youth to be “who they are, excel at what they love and develop the social, strategic and problem-solving skills necessary to grow into thriving adults all in a safe, moderated and inclusive environment.”

Registration for the season opens on March 14, with orientation scheduled for a week later, followed by practice week, placement stage and divisional stage, with all of it culminating with Championship Week during the week of May 21.
