Congressmen Derrick Van Orden, Greg Landsman, Morgan Luttrell, and Chris Deluzio have introduced bipartisan legislation aimed at enhancing suicide prevention and mental health support for veterans. The proposed bill, titled the "What Works for Preventing Veteran Suicide Act," mandates the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to establish clear objectives and adopt best practices in its suicide prevention initiatives. This approach is expected to improve data collection and effectiveness of such programs.
"We are still losing record numbers of our veterans every day to suicide," stated Rep. Van Orden. He emphasized the importance of taking comprehensive measures to address veteran suicide and expressed pride in working with Rep. Landsman on this legislative effort.
Rep. Landsman highlighted the potential life-saving impact of the bill, noting that it could significantly reduce veteran suicide rates by directing VA resources towards the most effective programs.
Rep. Luttrell described veteran suicide as a crisis that cannot be ignored, stressing his commitment to lowering these numbers through understanding which programs are successful.
Rep. Deluzio echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the need for proven tactics and tools in combating veteran suicide while expressing his dedication to supporting fellow veterans.
The legislation aims to provide structured guidelines for VA's suicide prevention pilots and outreach efforts, with an ultimate goal of reducing veteran suicides.
