Afghan refugees at Fort McCoy are in need of help and local charities are asking for help from the community.
"A public call for help! Specific needs include child and adult diapers, wipes, masks, sweat pants, socks, rain ponchos and such," State Rep. Kristina Shelton said in a Twitter post.
The Brown County Refugee Task Force has said they can resettle up to 49 refugees, according to the Green Bay Press Gazette.
There are currently over 5,000 refugees at Fort McCoy and it is estimated the fort will reach capacity in the next few weeks, according to the Green Bay Press Gazette.
Catholic ministries in La Crosse have asked specifically for clothing and hygiene items, a list of which can be found posted on their websites, according to the Green Bay Press Gazette.
"Nearly all Afghan families are arriving here with only the clothes on their backs, so the needs are immense," the Catholic Charities posted on its website. "Your generosity and support is greatly appreciated!"
Catholic charities across Wisconsin are working collaboratively with the United States Council of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) at Fort McCoy to establish Morale, Welfare and Recreation Centers (MWR) for the Afghan guests, as well as assist with basic needs, The Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Green Bay said on its website.
"We are offering assistance via our Immigrant and Refugee Services and are here to help in any way we can to welcome the stranger," The Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Green Bay said on its website.
