Eau Claire North has gone two weeks without taking the gridiron because of COVID-19 infections, with Sept. 17 the next date the Huskies could once again compete.

The Sept. 10 game against Chippewa Falls was the latest matchup the Huskies had to cancel after their game against Superior was axed, WEAU reported.

Eau Claire North Athletic Director Mike Pernsteiner said in a statement obtained by the station that the school would continue to monitor the team’s status in relation to future games.

“This is to be expected after going through the 2020 season, there’s going to be some adversity along the way,” the AD said in the release. “We are learning that COVID hasn’t gone away.”

Jimmy Kaska tweeted on Sept. 7 that the cancellation forced Chippewa Falls to find a replacement opponent.

The Huskies were riding the thrill of notching their first victory – a hard-fought 20-14 win over La Crosse Logan on Aug. 26 – over in more than half a decade when the pandemic induced cancellations occurred.

WEAU reported that COVID accounted for eight of the 24 total high school games that were cancelled the first week of September.

Barring a cancellation, Eau Claire North’s next game is against Menomonie.
