Free Wi-Fi is publicly available in and near downtown Jackson’s Horace Blackman Park.
The service, which became available in the middle part of last month, was made possible by a partnership between the Jackson District Library and City of Jackson officials, MLive reported.
“Thousands of people in Jackson County still depend on public computers and internet access venues, despite the global proliferation of mobile phones and home computers,” Sara Tackett, Jackson District Library director, told the publication. “One of our main initiatives has always been increasing internet access to area residents.”
Jackson Parks and Recreation director Kelli Hoover told JTV that the Wi-Fi will benefit not only Jackson residents who live in the area, but also visitors to the downtown area.
Downtown visitors can access the free Wi-Fi 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Will Forgrave, the library’s marketing and communications manager, told MLive that he’s excited for service.
“I can’t wait for the opportunity to open up my laptop and get some work done while enjoying the beautiful fall weather,” Forgrave said.
The initiative follows JDL’s collaboration with the Jackson Area Transportation Authority to install complimentary Wi-Fi on city busses.
WPR reported that more than 82,000 children in Wisconsin don’t have access to reliable internet at home.
