Rep. Ron Kind on Nov. 11 recognized Veterans Day and took to Twitter to honor the 100th anniversary of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Standing in the center of Arlington Cemetery, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier has been guarded by members of the Army’s Third Infantry 24/7 since April of 1948, according to Arlington Tours.

“Today we commemorate 100 years of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, a final resting place for unidentified American service members," the Wisconsin representative wrote in the Nov. 11 tweet. "These hallowed grounds are a place to reflect on valor, service and mourning for all who visit. We will never forget.”

According to Arlington Tours, several presidents, Supreme Court justices, public servants and astronauts, and over 400,000 veterans and their immediate families are buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

"There is nowhere within the hallowed grounds of Arlington National Cemetery that is more frequented by visitors than The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier," the Arlington Tours website says. "Located on a hill on high ground at almost the perfect geographic center of the cemetery, the tomb exemplifies valor and honor by remembering those who died committing brave and selfless acts with no one to bear witness to them."

Runs Ignuip reports that the Cadet Club of La Crosse held a Veterans Day 5k Run/Walk on Nov. 8 and donated proceeds to Freedom Honor Flight, an organization that flies veterans to visit memorials of the wars in which they served in Washington, D.C.

According to The Center Square, there are over 326,000 veterans in Wisconsin, comprising 7.2% of the state’s population.

“On Veterans Day, Wisconsinites come together to honor all those who have answered the call to serve," Kind said in another tweet. "Our veterans and servicemembers represent the very best our nation has to offer and we’re grateful for their service and sacrifice – today and every day.”
