The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (DOT) recently announced that it has upgraded its winter road conditions system which will be used to better inform residents of road and weather conditions.
According to WMTV News, the new Maintenance Decision Support System will generate field reports twice every hour compared to the old system, introduced in 2013, which only generated reports a few times each day.
"We replaced the previous system of field reporting for winter road conditions, with a technology based system that takes readings from key sources, including pavement temperatures, atmospheric conditions and snowplow maintenance activity," Wisconsin DOT wrote in a Jan. 31 Facebook post. "These upgrades triple coverage from 3,700 miles of roadway to more than 14,000 miles of roadway."
The reports will be used to better inform the Wisconsin DOT and county highway departments of current road and weather conditions.
"We’re proud to find new ways to leverage technology to improve service and give the public a more clear and accurate idea of how to prepare for the drive ahead," Wisconsin DOT secretary Craig Thompson said, according to WMTV News.
Data from Geographic Information Systems and the National Weather Service equipped on snowplows and weather sensors along roadways and at airports will be used to inform reports generated by the new system.
