Historically high gas prices are causing local Eau Claire residents to think about how much driving they actually need to do and consider travel alternatives.

Local residents told WQOW News that they have resorted to alternatives such as walking when possible or ride sharing as a way to avoid soaring gas prices.

"They are really high," Eau Claire resident Gabbie Henn told WQOW News. "I didn't think much about it until I had to fill my tank up one day, but I haven't been driving my car much for that reason, too. Luckily, I don't live far from my workplace so I do just opt for walking now. If I drove it would be two minutes. If I walked, it would be 10 to 15 minutes."

Some local residents said this is the highest they've ever seen gas prices.

"They're definitely getting a lot higher and it makes me very reminiscent of last summer when they were less than $3," Emily Schouweiler of Minneapolis told WQOW News. "That was super nice. It was really nice to fill up my tank for $20 or $30 bucks, but I do need to buy gas, so it kind of is what it is."

Many understand that gas prices are high because of the current Ukraine-Russia conflict, but hope that costs eventually come back down.

According to GasBuddy, gas prices were nearly identical 10 years ago.
