WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Derrick Van Orden (WI-03) has expressed his concern and disappointment with the U.S. Department of State for failing to provide requested information regarding the potential resettlement of refugees in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. In a letter addressed to Secretary Antony Blinken, Congressman Van Orden requested a detailed report on the vetting procedures conducted on the potential refugees by December 4, 2023.
"The silence from the State Department is incredibly concerning," said Rep. Van Orden. "I have a responsibility to ensure the well-being of my constituents, and without the ability to review the information I requested, I cannot say with confidence that these individuals were fully vetted. We are a nation of laws, and we must ensure that those who wish to immigrate or resettle here do so legally and are not threats to the safety and security of the United States. Until I have the information I requested, I will not support this resettlement."
Congressman Van Orden emphasized the importance of prioritizing the safety and security of American citizens, particularly his constituents. He acknowledged the contributions immigrants have made to the United States and expressed his willingness to welcome those who wish to legally immigrate. However, he stressed the need for thorough vetting procedures to be conducted before any migration or resettlement takes place.
In his letter to Secretary Blinken, Congressman Van Orden highlighted the need for a detailed report on the vetting procedures, including information on the specific individuals, their country of origin, and the documentation of thorough inquiries and investigations. He also requested information on the entities responsible for conducting the vetting, whether they were government personnel or civilian contractors, and if contractors were involved, the specific contracting company used.
The Congressman's request for information is rooted in his obligation as a Member of Congress to ensure the safety and well-being of his constituents. He made it clear that without the requested information, he cannot support the resettlement of refugees in Eau Claire.
The State Department's failure to provide the requested information raises concerns about transparency and accountability in the refugee resettlement process. Congressman Van Orden's firm stance reflects his commitment to upholding the rule of law and protecting the safety and security of the United States.
As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen whether the State Department will address the concerns raised by Congressman Van Orden and provide the requested information. Until then, the Congressman's position remains unchanged – without the necessary information, he will not support the resettlement of refugees in Eau Claire.
