Tomah Health is urging local residents to wear red on Friday, February 7th, in support of National Wear Red Day. This event, created by the American Heart Association, aims to raise awareness about heart disease in women and support ongoing research and education.
Shana Steele, Director of Cardiac Rehabilitation at Tomah Health, emphasized the importance of this initiative. “Wear Red Day raises awareness of the leading cause of death for women, which is heart disease,” said Steele.
Steele highlighted the significance of recognizing risk factors and warning signs associated with heart disease. “Although some women have no symptoms, it is important to be aware of signs of a heart attack. For example, chest pain or discomfort, pain in the upper back or neck indigestion, heartburn, nausea or vomiting, extreme fatigue, dizziness, and shortness of breath,” she explained.
Heart disease is responsible for over 422,000 deaths among American women annually. To combat this issue, Steele advocates for positive lifestyle changes such as quitting smoking, eating healthily, regular exercise, and stress management.
Steele also noted that men should participate in the event to show support since heart disease impacts everyone. “It’s important for everyone to be aware of heart disease and the signs and symptoms of a heart attack so we can help to reduce the risk of heart disease in the future.”
