During a recent blood drive at Tomah Recreation Park, Tomah resident Alis Zellmer participated in a double red cell blood donation. This was her first time engaging in this type of donation, which involves using a special machine to allow donors to give two units of red blood cells while returning plasma and platelets to the donor. Zellmer expressed her motivation by saying, “If this can help somebody on their worst day then I can get through a little fatigue or whatever may come; but I feel great.”

Zellmer is employed as a clinical exercise physiologist at Tomah Health's Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation Department. The double red cell donation process is highlighted for its convenience and comfort, with donations possible every 112 days compared to the 56-day interval for whole blood donations.

The event was organized by Versiti Blood Center of Wisconsin in collaboration with Tomah Health. Emalea Cogdill, an account representative from Versiti, reported that the two-day drive collected enough blood products to treat 176 patients. She noted the ongoing need for donations: “As the weather gets nicer, days get longer and life gets busier, we have to remember that the need for blood never stops.” She also mentioned challenges such as decreased donations due to vacations and seasonal illnesses.

Zellmer emphasized her commitment to donating because of Tomah Health's relationship with Versiti. She stated, “I think it really goes back to the whole motto of Tomah health. We’re constantly working for the community and with the community.” Nearly 80 people donated during this drive, with plans for another event on May 13 & 14 at Recreation Park in Tomah.

Versiti serves as the sole blood supplier for over 50 hospital systems in Wisconsin, including Tomah Health. Zellmer encourages others to donate by sharing her positive experiences: “All the workers I’ve ever come encounter with have been so sweet and they really talk you through it.”
