La Crosse Mayor Mitch Reynolds took to Facebook to celebrate the U.S. Route 14/South Avenue project, which has been recognized with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation’s (WisDOT) Excellence in Highway Construction Award for Concrete Paving.

"I might not have the expertise to judge paving. But definitely a transformative transportation project for our community. Nice work," he wrote in a Wisconsin Department of Transportation post repost. The project recently won Excellence in Concrete Paving at WisDOT’s 2024 Excellence in Construction Awards. According to WisDOT, "Residents and visitors in La Crosse have a smoother and more efficient route on US 14/61 (South Ave) after a reconstruction project wrapped up last year." They further noted, "Crews fully reconstructed just over a mile of the heavily traveled corridor between Green Bay Street and Ward Ave, with more than 50 residential and 30 business properties adjacent to the highway."

According to WisDOT’s website, Chippewa Falls-based Chippewa Concrete Services received the award for work on the project that spans Green Bay Street and Ward Avenue. The scope of work involved renovating just over a mile of the heavily traveled corridor with over 50 homes and 30 companies next to the highway. Chippewa Concrete Services was successful in the road reconstruction project by being actively engaged, flexible, and optimizing their time, according to WisDOT.

Middleton-based Mead & Hunt, which provides clients with expert planning, architecture design, engineering, environmental and construction administration services across various market sectors including transportation, worked with Chippewa Concrete Services on the project. The narrow project corridor presented obstacles to the project team because outside of adjacent buildings, a significant segment of the roadway was constructed within the existing 66-foot right-of-way using temporary limited easement during construction. Moreover, bi-directional traffic needed to be maintained during construction. The team broke the project into stages to mitigate impact and utilized nightly and weekend closures.
