Western Technical College's annual report on the Cavalier Cupboard, an on-campus food pantry, reveals a significant increase in usage for the 2023-24 period. The report from the department of Student Life, Equity, and Engagement indicates that the total number served rose to 3,682, up from 2,299 the previous year. A total of 389 households and individuals benefited from the pantry, with repeat users accounting for 79 percent of usage. The highest demand was recorded in January and February.
Mitch Berry, Student Inclusion Specialist at Western Technical College, commented on the findings: “We continue to reduce the stigma for students who are food insecure. A large part of that increase comes from awareness, but also the growing need and the realization that the Cupboard is here for everyone.”
The Cavalier Cupboard was established in 2014 by a student at Western Technical College to address food insecurity among students. In its current year alone, it operated for 350 days with assistance from eight student and staff volunteers. Since its inception, it has served a total of 14,681 students and their families.
