Today, the Senate passed a bill introduced by Congressman Derrick Van Orden, Chairman of the House Veterans’ Affairs Economic Opportunity Subcommittee. The legislation, H.R. 1815 - the VA Home Loan Program Reform Act, aims to establish a permanent partial claims program within the VA Home Loan Program.
The bill seeks to align the VA with other federal agencies that provide home loans and replace the previous VASP program initiated during the Biden administration. This change would allow veterans who are behind on their mortgage payments to access federal assistance similar to FHA loan programs available to non-veterans.
Rep. Van Orden expressed his approval of the Senate's decision, stating, “Under the Biden administration, the VA created the VASP program without consulting Congress, costing American taxpayers $5.8 billion and endangering the entire VA home loan guarantee program.” He added that his bill provides a solution for servicemembers and veterans to maintain homeownership and thanked his Senate colleagues for passing it.
Chairman Bost also commented on the significance of this legislation: “The VA Home Loan program has helped millions of veterans achieve the American Dream of owning a home... The VA Home Loan Program Reform Act addresses that need head-on.” He praised Rep. Van Orden for his leadership in modernizing the VA Home Loan system and creating a partial claim program aimed at preventing veteran homelessness.
The next step is for President Trump to sign this bill into law.
