In preparation for the upcoming academic year, the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse's Residence Life staff has released a comprehensive packing list for students moving into college. This guide includes essential items as well as ten commonly overlooked necessities.

Among the recommended items are headphones or earbuds, which are crucial for maintaining focus while studying in shared living spaces. A general first-aid kit is also advised to avoid unnecessary trips to the store when minor illnesses occur. Students should consider bringing late-night snacks and microwavable meals to sustain energy during study sessions.

Health insurance information is vital, including details about local healthcare centers such as Emplify Health and Mayo Clinic Health System. Additionally, students planning to work on or off-campus will need original identification documents like a passport or social security card.

Weather-related items like umbrellas are often forgotten but necessary for navigating campus during inclement weather. Power strips can be useful despite rooms having multiple outlets; however, caution is advised to prevent electrical overloads.

Staying hydrated is important, so students are encouraged to bring water bottles that can be refilled at campus stations. For comfort in shared rooms, a box fan or clip-on fan is suggested. An adaptable attitude is emphasized as plans may change once settled in.

Coordination with roommates can help avoid duplicate items and maximize space in residence hall rooms. The packing list also includes specific recommendations such as small microwaves (under 1000 watts), school supplies, clothing appropriate for different seasons, and basic kitchen equipment if cooking independently.
