Representative Karen Hurd, a Republican serving Wisconsin's 69th House district, shared updates on the revitalization of the Domtar Dam in Rothschild through a series of posts on August 22, 2025. Hurd attended the groundbreaking event and highlighted both the historical significance and economic impact of the project.
In her first post, Hurd stated, "Earlier this week, I was honored to attend the groundbreaking for the revitalization of the @DomtarEveryday Dam in Rothschild. This dam on the Wisconsin River, originally constructed in 1912, is in need of repairs." (August 22, 2025).
She continued by emphasizing how Domtar’s operations extend beyond local communities: "These investments will be felt far outside of these two communities as Domtar sources the wood they use to make their products from around the state, including the 69th District. I look forward to seeing the positive impact Domtar’s investments will have on Central Wisconsin." (August 22, 2025).
Addressing funding for these efforts, Hurd added that "During the budget process, $42 million in state funds was set aside to aid with repairs to this dam. With the investment of the state in this revitalization project Domtar will be making significant investments at both their Rothschild and Nekoosa paper mills." (August 22, 2025).
The Domtar Dam has been a fixture on the Wisconsin River since its construction in 1912. The current repair initiative involves both public funding and private investment from Domtar Corporation. These developments are expected to benefit not only Rothschild but also other areas where Domtar operates or sources materials.
Hurd was elected to represent Wisconsin's 69th House district in 2025 after succeeding Donna Rozar.
