Blane Huppert has been appointed as the inaugural director of the University Business Collaboration Center (UBCC) at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. The UBCC, a new initiative, is designed to connect university and business resources in STEM fields and other areas. Its goal is to increase industry partnerships, provide students with more practical learning experiences such as internships and research projects, and encourage collaboration between faculty, staff, and businesses.
The center will be housed in the university’s new Science and Technology Innovation Center, a $117 million facility equipped with modern laboratories and workshops to support educational programs and industry engagement.
UWRF Interim Chancellor John Chenoweth commented on Huppert’s appointment: “The appointment of Blane as the inaugural director of the new University Business Collaboration Center is the perfect way to begin bringing our vision to life. Blane’s strong ties to the community and expertise in business development make him an ideal leader for the UBCC to ensure we are enhancing the student experience and driving regional economic growth throughout the St. Croix Valley."
Huppert has a background in broadcast journalism before moving into a 25-year career in strategic marketing and communications at 3M. He also worked with WiSys, an organization that supports patenting and licensing innovations for Universities of Wisconsin.
“I’m humbled and excited for the opportunity to lead the UBCC,” Huppert said. “We now have a dynamic new platform for students and faculty to collaborate meaningfully with the business community. We’re poised to do great things together.”
Huppert holds a bachelor’s degree from UWRF in broadcast journalism and history—where he received the Chancellor’s Award for Students—and an MBA from Rollins College. He has maintained connections with UWRF through service on its Alumni Advisory Board.
Karl Peterson, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, said: “Blane brings a wealth of experience in marketing and relationship building to his new role. We’re delighted to welcome him back to UWRF to lead the UBCC.”
Huppert will start his position on September 15.
