WASHINGTON, D.C. – In a move aligned with Financial Literacy Month, Congressman Derrick Van Orden (WI-03), Chairman of the Veterans’ Affairs Economic Opportunity Subcommittee, and Veterans’ Affairs Committee Chairman Mike Bost (R-IL) have unveiled the Enhancing the Transitioning Servicemember’s Experience (ETS) Act. The legislation aims to enhance programs used by servicemembers approaching separation and recently separated veterans from the U.S. military.
“We owe it to our servicemembers to provide them with the best resources possible to assist them in their transition from active duty to civilian,” emphasized Congressman Van Orden, highlighting the importance of the ETS Act in improving financial literacy counseling for transitioning individuals.
Chairman Bost echoed these sentiments, stating, “Too many veterans and their families endure financial hardships after they transition out of the military.” He praised the ETS Act as a crucial step towards ensuring transitioning servicemembers and their families are equipped with the necessary financial knowledge and tools to navigate their post-military lives successfully.
The legislation, endorsed by both Van Orden and Bost, seeks to enhance the Transition Assistance Program (TAP) to provide transitioning servicemembers with comprehensive financial literacy discussions. This proactive approach aims to empower individuals to make informed financial decisions before facing challenges, thus mitigating financial struggles often experienced post-transition.
