This week, Congressman Derrick Van Orden engaged with farmers from Wisconsin's Third District in a call to discuss agricultural issues and provide updates from Washington, D.C. During the conversation, Van Orden focused on his efforts to support the farming community, bolster rural economies, and ensure the success of agriculture in the district.

One topic discussed was the response to H5N1. Van Orden stated that "the reason that egg prices are $7 for a dozen is because the Biden administration didn’t address the problem; they just slaughtered millions of birds." He emphasized the need for better biosecurity measures and mentioned Secretary Rollins' meeting with poultry farmers as part of USDA’s ongoing response.

Regarding checkoff dollars, Van Orden expressed his support for their proper use but opposed making them voluntary at a federal level. He noted that checkoffs were established by producers to promote research and information.

On SNAP funding, he assured constituents that "any U.S. citizen receiving SNAP that truly needs it will continue to receive SNAP benefits," stressing his personal connection to food assistance programs and his commitment to preventing cuts for those legally entitled.

Van Orden also addressed reforms needed in H-2A/H-2B programs, mentioning his involvement in an Agriculture Labor Working Group which proposed 25 recommendations. He highlighted plans for legislation requiring employers to verify employment history and deporting individuals working illegally while allowing them to return once properly documented.
