Today, Congressman Derrick Van Orden from Wisconsin's 3rd District addressed the House of Representatives in support of H.R. 8371, known as the Senator Elizabeth Dole 21st Century Veterans Healthcare and Benefits Improvement Act. The legislation aims to provide veterans with enhanced healthcare services, educational opportunities, and vocational programs.
Van Orden highlighted that his own proposal, the Protect Military Dependents Act, has been incorporated into this comprehensive bill. This provision ensures that dependents of veterans are not held responsible if a servicemember loses their educational benefits.
During his remarks on the House Floor, Van Orden emphasized his personal connection to the issue by mentioning his uncle and aunt, both World War II veterans. "The two individuals are Robert Francis Mulligan and Mary Jean Mulligan – my Uncle Bob and Aunt Mary Jean," he said. He recounted how they died under poor conditions due to lack of funding provided by such an act.
Van Orden also expressed strong support for Gold Star Families—families who have lost a loved one in military service. He stated: "When a servicemember passes and their family members remain... it's a lifetime commitment." He urged for continued efforts to help these families move forward while honoring their deceased loved ones.
Concluding his speech, Van Orden remarked on the importance of remembering those who served: "We have to do everything we possibly can so they can move on with their lives in memory of their loved ones."
