Congressional leaders have introduced a bipartisan resolution to designate May as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. The initiative, led by Congressmen Derrick Van Orden (WI-03), Tim Walberg (R-MI), Donald Norcross (D-NJ), and Troy Balderson (R-OH), aims to raise awareness about motorcycle safety. Senators Joni Ernst (R-IA) and Gary Peters (D-MI) have also introduced a companion resolution in the Senate.
Rep. Van Orden emphasized the importance of motorcycle safety, stating, “Motorcycles are about freedom. As a lifelong motorcyclist myself, I know firsthand the joys that come with riding, but I also know that too many lives are lost each year in preventable accidents. Riders are out there every day, so let’s look twice to save a life.”
Rep. Walberg highlighted the need for increased awareness, noting that “the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported 6,335 motorcycle fatalities” in 2023. He stated that this resolution is an opportunity to encourage road users to share the road and drive smart.
Rep. Norcross spoke about the enjoyment of riding motorcycles and stressed the importance of safety: "Everyone should have the opportunity to ride safely."
Rep. Balderson expressed his commitment to promoting safe riding practices: “As more riders begin to hit the road this year, let’s recommit to safe riding practices and remind all motorists to share the road.”
Senator Ernst shared her personal connection with motorcycles and expressed excitement about promoting rider education during Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month.
Senator Peters emphasized keeping roadways safe for both riders and drivers: “I’m proud to once again introduce this resolution recognizing the millions of riders in Michigan and across our country.”
The Congressional Motorcycle Caucus continues its efforts under Congressman Van Orden's co-chairmanship.
