The statement emphasized their ongoing communication with law enforcement agencies: “My office is aware of the potentially tragic incident at UW-Platteville. My staff and I are in close communication with the police and sheriffs departments. We are praying for the best potential outcome and are standing by to assist in any way possible from the federal”.
Later that day, Rep. Van Orden highlighted legislative efforts to reform SNAP through what he termed "The One, Big, Beautiful Bill." He stated: "The One, Big, Beautiful Bill will restore integrity in the SNAP program and ensure it is best serving those who need it most."

Derrick Van Orden was born in Minnesota in 1969 and currently resides in Prairie du Chien. He graduated from Excelsior University with a Bachelor of Science degree and earned a Juris Doctor from Mitchell Hamline School of Law.
