Today, a bipartisan bill was introduced in Washington, D.C. by Congressman Derrick Van Orden of Wisconsin and Congressman Tim Moore of North Carolina. The legislation, known as H.R. 3780 or the Border Operations Service Medal Act, aims to honor U.S. servicemembers and federal personnel involved in border defense operations following President Trump's 2025 National Emergency declaration.

The proposed bill tasks the Secretary of Defense with creating a Border Operations Service Medal. This medal would recognize military and National Guard members who have participated in designated border operations since January 1, 2025. It will be authorized for wear according to uniform regulations and noted in the recipient's service record.

Rep. Van Orden commented on the initiative, saying, "President Biden manufactured the worst border crisis in our nation’s history." He praised the servicemembers for their efforts at the southern border against violent gangs and drug trafficking.

Rep. Moore also supported the measure, stating that troops have worked to stop what he described as an invasion threatening national security. He said these individuals are defending against various threats while facing criticism from some political quarters.

Several representatives co-sponsored the bill, including John McGuire, Abe Hamadeh, Jack Bergman, Tom Barrett, Ralph Norman, Robert Aderholt, Juan Ciscomani, Hal Rogers, Don Davis, and Chuck Edwards.

Congressman Jack Bergman expressed pride in recognizing those serving at the southern border: "Our troops... are carrying out a critical mission - upholding the rule of law."

Congressman Hamadeh emphasized his perspective as a former Army Captain and Member of the Armed Services Committee: "Serving on the border is not an easy job;... Our country is safer today because of their sacrifice."

Congressman Hal Rogers remarked on how military efforts have reduced illegal activities at historic rates: "I am honored to join Congressman Tim Moore... to recognize their efforts with a special Border Operations Service Medal."

Chuck Edwards acknowledged those dealing with what he called "the worst border crisis" and stressed their earned recognition through this honor.

Finally, Congressman Aderholt expressed full support for ensuring these service members receive due acknowledgment: "The Border Operations Service Medal Act is a long-overdue honor."

This legislative move follows President Trump's national emergency declaration concerning threats from cartels and illicit drugs earlier this year.
