The Specialized Unit within La Crosse County Human Services has completed its first year of operation. During this period, the team, consisting of six social workers, has assisted 169 individuals. The unit collaborates closely with the Homeless Outreach Team (HOT), focusing on building relationships and assessing service needs. Their commitment and compassion are highly valued by the community.

On May 13th, The Collective on 4th marked its Grand Opening. This facility has allocated thirteen units specifically for referrals from the Pathways to Housing list. Referrals are submitted by caseworkers involved in Pathways Conferencing and undergo a review process to ensure suitability before being forwarded to Lutheran Social Services. This organization is responsible for making final selections as the property manager. The housing model aims to support individuals requiring lower-level assistance.

Efforts are underway in collaboration with local agencies to develop a system coordination process for implementing Medicaid’s housing support waiver (1915(i)). This waiver offers eligible homeless individuals assistance with housing and relocation. The coordination process will ensure that everyone within the service network is informed about approvals and service assignments related to 1915(i).

Applications for peer support specialist positions are currently under review, with interviews already initiated. The goal is to find candidates who have personal experience with homelessness and can provide skill development training while fostering trust and encouraging active engagement with available support services.
