Today, Congressman Derrick Van Orden of Wisconsin's 3rd district released a statement in response to Concordia University Wisconsin's decision to officially recognize Jacob Turner’s Turning Point USA (TPUSA) chapter. The university’s move follows two years during which the group sought administrative approval.
“I want to thank Concordia University Wisconsin President Dr. Erik P. Ankerberg for doing the right thing in recognizing Jacob Turner’s TPUSA chapter. Concordia’s decision reinforces our nation’s principle that we should be able to engage in civic and political activities freely.
“This chapter will carry on the work of leaders like Charlie Kirk, promoting free speech and civic engagement among students. I look forward to seeing the positive impact this chapter will have on campus,” Van Orden said.
Jacob Turner plans to use the newly recognized student organization to promote voter registration and civic engagement at Concordia University Wisconsin.
Van Orden also stated he is reviewing similar cases at other universities across the country to ensure students’ rights to free expression are protected.
Derrick Van Orden currently serves as a member of the U.S. Congress, representing Wisconsin’s 3rd district after replacing Ron Kind in 2023. In recent elections, Van Orden won against Rebecca Cooke in 2024 with 51.3% of the vote and defeated Brad Pfaff in 2022 with 51.8%.
