The University of Wisconsin-River Falls (UWRF) is bringing back the Farm and Industry Short Course (FISC), a 16-week residential program focused on preparing students for careers in the dairy industry. The program will run from October 27, 2025, to March 13, 2026, and includes a holiday break.

Students participating in FISC will receive hands-on training at UWRF’s facilities, which include two laboratory farms, a dairy pilot plant, and a meat processing plant. Participants can earn college credits that may be applied toward a bachelor’s degree at UWRF or transferred to other institutions.

The curriculum covers animal management topics such as health and welfare, nutrition, reproductive physiology, and milk quality. It also introduces basic business management and accounting principles.

“The Farm and Industry Short Course is a good choice for students who want to gain practical, hands-on experience in dairy and agricultural industries without committing to a full four-year degree,” said Steve Kelm, professor of dairy science and director of the FISC program. “We’ve designed the curriculum to be immersive and immediately applicable, giving students the tools they need to succeed in today’s evolving ag landscape.”

Enrolled students will live in campus residence halls with access to student privileges similar to those offered to four-year students. This includes joining clubs, using campus recreation facilities at no cost, attending athletic events for free, and receiving reduced admission to theater performances.
